“Hooked on the Lake” … a Red, White & Blue Tablescape

Hang up your bunting, unfurl your flags and pull out all your red, white and blue … it’s almost America’s 242nd birthday! I love getting ready for the 4th of July and this tablescape seemed to come together effortlessly as I went around the house picking up an assortment of lake-y, picnic items and all things red, white and blue.

The focal point of this tablescape is vintage minnow bucket that Richard found for me on one of our antique-ing excursions. Some time ago, I told him I was looking a for a minnow bucket though I had a certain “look” in mind for that bucket. I wanted an antique bucket with good coloring and with graphics that were still readable, but I didn’t want it to look all “beat up” so I could use it for arrangements. I was amazed when months after I mentioned it to him, he came to me smiling with this perfect gift in hand, complete with both the bucket and the minnow strainer and with the added bonus of a little rust to enhance the patina! Now, that my friends is a gift more romantic to me than a bouquet of roses! <3

Falls City The Angler’s Choice …

These woodland ferns are from our own backyard and are particularly gorgeous this year and so lush, they almost come up to my waist! They add color and “mood” and look charming tucked inside the minnow bucket.

A blue and white buffalo check throw is bold and sassy and looks like the perfect tablecloth for a 4th of July picnic or BBQ. Cobalt blue fish plates add to the lake theme and match perfectly with blue stemware, a special gift our son and daughter bought for me with their “pooled” allowances, many years ago. <3

These cute clear glass bowls, shaped liked fish were another antique find and are stacked next to a chunky star filled with some red, white, and table glitz! (:

The metal rowboat is a great caddy for all accoutrements needed for a meal … star shaped dessert plates, straws, cutlery, plastic tumblers, and red, white and blue fans to stir up a little breeze in hot Texas weather.

A lake sign in vivid red ties the tablescape all together … HOOKED ON THE LAKE!

Thinking today of all our military men, women and their families. Thank you for the sacrifices you have made and given for our freedom and for our Country. <3

Bunny Tablescape and Easter Desserts … Carrot-patch Cupcakes & Cottontail Spice Cookies

“Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!”

Today was a glorious Easter and celebration of Resurrection Day! Our day was spent rejoicing in Christ’s resurrection and also reflecting on the gift of everlasting life that Jesus has given to all that believe that He is God’s Son.

Before this day is over, I wanted to share this sweet bunny tablescape with you. It all began with this soft brown table runner with white fuzzy bunny’s from TJ Maxx.

I was thrilled when I saw how well the bunny runner matched the embroidered napkins I had already ordered, made by Mud Pie. The napkins were “almost” too cute to use, edged with white pom-poms and the word “HAPPY” sewn on each napkin!

I slipped each napkin into little grapevine wreaths that I made into napkin rings. They seemed like the perfect pairing since they are trimmed in green ivy and blossoms … which every bunny loves!

White serving pieces, also from Mud Pie add to the whimsy and “hoppy” theme of the table.

White Porcelain dishes edged with swags of pink rosebuds are piled into a favorite bunny crate and are ready to be placed at each setting.

Silver Cutlery looks elegant even casually “bunched” into a matching flower vase and are ready to be passed around the table.

Time for desserts! … chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting are sprinkled with ground graham cracker crumbs dyed with Wilton Green paste dye to look like grass. A foil wrapped carrot, with the foil removed from the tip of the carrot is inserted into the chocolate frosting to look like Mr. McGregor’s carrot patch!

Instructions for dying Graham Cracker Crumbs

To blend the paste dye into the graham cracker crumbs, add dye to a small amount of water and stir water to blend
Pour the tinted water into a ziploc bag filled with graham cracker crumbs
Knead the bag until the color spreads throughout the crumbs, adding more dye as needed.
After crumbs are the desired color, spread crumbs on rimmed cookie sheet and place in 275 degree oven until moisture is removed, 10 – 15 minutes.
Remove crumbs from oven and let cool before sprinkling on cupcakes

Speaking of Mr. McGregor’s carrot patch … Here’s a sweet little Peter Rabbit vignette I have displayed in my Music Room. These Wedgewood dishes are made in England and were just the right size for our daughter’s little hands and tea parties! Each dish is painted with Beatrix Potter’s charming pictures and inscribed with the words from her book “The Tale of Peter Rabbit.” This is also a little teaser to one of my next blog’s all about … “Spring Vignette’s!” (;

Back to the desserts! Cottontail Spice cookies are “Cake Mix” Cookies and they are delicious and so easy to make!

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees
To any cake mix (I used a Spice Cake mix) just add 2 eggs and 1/2 cup of oil
Mix ingredients together and scoop cookie dough onto a cookie sheet lined with foil or parchment paper
Bake approximately 9 minutes
Remove from oven and cool for 1 minute before placing cookies on wax paper to finish cooling.
Top with choice of frosting, using a decorator bag and tip.

Woodland Tablescape … DIY Centerpiece & Napkin Rings

I enjoyed doing some tabletop decorating last week and I combined two different decorating styles in my table setting. I love the look of fragile crystal and goldware mixed with chunky pottery, natural grapevine napkin rings and woven baskets. “Elegance meets Rustic” and “opposites, do indeed attract” (; … as this duo is lovely together and the contrast of styles makes a cozy woodland tablescape.To make the woodland centerpiece I took the plastic covering off of 2 blocks of floral foam and hot glued them into the bottom of a woven basket I had. Then I began filling the basket with a collection of grasses, cattails, pine cone floral stems, pheasant feathers and birch twigs I had “amassed” over the years. The tallest part of any arrangement should be in the center, so after anchoring my tallest pieces I began “fanning down” both sides from the center of the arrangement, inserting my filler into the florist foam. The last addition and focal point I added to the arrangement was a metal art piece … a copper stag among metal fir trees. For my place settings I used pieces of vintage Hull and Pfaltzgraff pottery, a treasure that Richard found and bought for me at an auction he went to with his brother, Bob. The dishes are a sweet remembrance for both of us since Bob passed away this past October. <3 The pattern on this stoneware is known as “Brown Drip” pattern, a favorite of both the Hull and Pfaltzgraff Stoneware Companies during the 1930’s.These simple, rustic napkin rings are made using mini-grapevine wreaths. I downloaded my free woodland tags from Decorator’s Notebook by Bethan John. After printing and cutting out my tags, I punched a hole in each tag using a standard hole punch. Then I inserted a moss-green satin ribbon into the hole of each tag and tied the ribbon into a bow to the grapevine, making sure the tag was facing out as I pulled my knot of the bow, tight.I love these darling little bean pots and keep collecting them whenever I see them at antique stores. They look charming holding BBQ beans for autumn wiener roasts … filled with Chili con Carne on cold winter evenings … brimming with Stuffed Pepper Soup on breezy Spring picnics … or in the summer, filled with colorful Cajun Beans (recipe coming at a later date!) alongside grilled steaks! Crystal glasses and little goblets from Germany are etched with grapevines and are rimmed in gold and have golden bases. I love the look of the fragile crystal contrasting with the heavy pottery and the comparison makes the crystal seem even more delicate. And this hand painted canoe makes a darling caddy for sweeteners!A mixture of metals … the copper stag and the goldware add gleam to all the forest browns, moss greens and the deep brown dishes. For a final touch of coziness, I added this little lamp that looks like it was made for my woodland tablescape! The golden lampshade matches the carved canoe and also highlights the goldware and golden goblets while the dark silhouettes of the spruce trees and moose on the lamp shade adds more “depth” to my rustic theme.You know how I love using every day objects in unusual ways?! I pulled Richard’s cashmere muffler from the closet and thought it made the perfect table runner for my woodland tablescape! The softness of the muffler contrasted with the rough basket centerpiece and it’s color … the same browns and moss-green colors found in the forest!Juxtaposition/definition by Merriam-Webster: the act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side often to compare or contrast or to create an interesting effect. Hmmm … crystal next to pottery, textured, woven centerpiece sitting atop soft, luxurious cashmere, and rustic grapevines mixed with elegant goldware??? I love juxtaposition decorating! (:P.S. We saw 2 Bald Eagles, yesterday!!! Neither Richard or I had ever seen one except in books or film! Then, we saw 2 in one day! The first eagle we saw around noon just nonchalantly sitting in a tree and the second one we saw in a totally different area, near sunset, also perched in the top of a huge Sycamore Tree. After our second Bald Eagle flew off, our “Blue, Super Moon” was just begin to rise and it was gorgeous! I couldn’t help but think of the scripture I had just read that morning …“Praise the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. He wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind.” Psalms 104:1-3

Winter Wonderland Tablescape …

I had fun creating a whimsical tablescape befitting our first wintry weather, complete with snow flocked trees, a frozen pond, and miniature skaters. Little twinkle lights glow in faux white branches covered in glitter while the “real” tree branches loom beyond the window, stark and dark against the twilight sky.

A navy tablecloth covered with white lace is the snowy backdrop for crystal mugs and cherished blue stemware … reflecting sweet “yesteryear.” Memories of our own dear little boy and girl carefully choosing each jewel colored stem and buying them for me with their combined allowances … Momma’s beloved Christmas present! <3

Christmas Naif dishes by Villeroy and Boch, painted by the French artist Gérard Laplau depict a picturesque village scene with children playing near a snowman … “with a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal” and a horse-drawn sleigh … are perfect for my Winter Wonderland!

“Come to the church in the wildwood” with windows glowing, amongst the twinkling trees and spruce.

Winter evening beckoning in the deepening twilight, within and beyond …

These little skaters, with their magnet pedestals actually pirouette around the iced pond when the music box is wound up and playing.

After dinner coffee and Dutch Almonette cookies are waiting to be served. Crystal mugs, biscuit barrel, and sugar creamer set match the “icicle” look of the frozen pond and snow flocked trees.

“Coffee?” “Yes, please!” (:

White crocheted-edged napkins are tucked inside navy blue napkins and are tied with a simple gold cord which nonchalantly holds the salad and dinner fork. Individual little tealights glow in white holders covered in “snowballs” and personalize each place setting.

Hope you’re staying warm and enjoying this special season with moments … snuggled under cozy blankets … holding steamy mugs that warm your hands … gazing at the beauty of winter through frosted window panes … with family and friends taking “the bite” out of the frost! (:

Christmas Tablescape “Up on the Housetop Reindeer Pause …”

The table is set and ready for a Christmas Brunch with Fitz and Floyd “Florentine Christmas White Stag Reindeer” dressed and ready for their important flight on Christmas Eve! Saddles are trimmed with holly and tassels and lie cushioned on the reindeer’s back atop cheery red and green blankets (that look like they were made by Santa’s elves!) Encircling their necks are pine branch harnesses festooned with pine cones, holly leaves and bows.

Antique snack sets are stacked and ready to be filled with finger foods. Christmas punch or Percolator Spiced Tea will fill the matching cups that set in special compartments on the glass trays.

A gauzy runner with beaded edges weaves around a pine garland with tiny twinkle lights that add a touch of Christmas magic.

Shimmering gold is repeated in the brass stand holding a carafe … a shiny picture frame, … and a line of dessert spoons. The colors in the picture “Noel” are a perfect match to the colors of the reindeer and serving pieces, so it became a bit of “whimsy” and a part of the tablescape, propped on a golden easel. Nearby, a sweet little creamer and sugar bowl are nestled close and adorned with Christmas bows.

Gold forks and linen napkins edged in lace are lined up for easy buffet-style serving.

Halloween Tablescape “Trick or Treat … Give Me Something Good to Eat!”

Just in time for Halloween night S’more Ghost Peeps and Candy Coated Pretzel Wands are easy to make. These festive looking treats are perfect to grab “on the go” or to serve after your Halloween dinner and they are “something good to eat!”

S’more Peeps – The best part of these adorable treats … there is “no baking” required! Just “gather” ingredients and put them into treat bags!

Ingredients & Supplies:

graham crackers
fun size Hershey bars
Ghost Peeps
favor bags (I used Wilton’s small, clear, favor bags from the baking aisle in Michael’s)
Halloween ribbon
package of blank gift tags or tag punch (I used my Recollection tag punch)
Halloween stamps
ink pad
standard hole punch
Halloween plastic rings (I bought mine from the Dollar Tree)

Instructions:

Open gift tags or punch out gift tags, using a die-cut punch
Stamp each tag with a Halloween stamp of your choice (since I was adding spider rings to my treat bags, I stamped each tag with a picture of a spider
Using a standard hole punch, punch a hole in the top of each tag
Break a graham cracker sheet into 2 squares and slide both squares into a clear favor bag
Place 2 fun size Hershey bars on top of the graham crackers
Top Hershey bars with one Ghost Peep
Tie top of bag with Halloween ribbon in a simple knot
Slide tag onto ribbon and knot again
Slip Halloween ring over knot

Candy Coated Pretzel Wands

Ingredients & Supplies

1 bag of Salted Pretzel rods
Wilton vanilla baking chips (I used bright green and purple)
Halloween sprinkles and nonpareils
large treat bags, large enough to cover entire pretzel (I used Wilton’s large favor bags located on the baking aisle in Michael’s)
Halloween ribbon
black tulle
Halloween plastic rings (I bought mine at Dollar Tree)

Directions:

Melt baking chips according to directions on package (I used a tall mug to melt my baking chips)
After baking chips are melted, insert pretzel rod into candy and swirl to cover.
Place candy covered pretzel on wax paper placed on a cookie sheet
Repeat until pretzels are all covered with candy
If you are only coating your pretzels with one coat of candy and one color, sprinkle the warm candy coating with decorations and nonpareils. Do not sprinkle decorations on the pretzels that you want to coat with a 2nd layer of melted candy. (See picture below)
Place cookie sheet in freezer to speed up hardening of candy
If you would like a 2nd color of candy coating on your pretzel, repeat process of melting baking chips and dipping pretzel, after the first coating has hardened (10-15 minutes in freezer)
Sprinkle 2nd coating of candy with sprinkles or nonpareils
Cool until candy hardens. NOTE: I placed my cookie sheet filled with pretzels into the freezer to harden. If cooling in freezer, do not place pretzels in favor bags until coating has reached room temperature to prevent condensation from forming in favor bag!
Slide candy coated pretzel into favor bag and close the opening by tying with a 7-8″ strip of black tulle and Halloween ribbon.
Place Halloween ring over the knot in the ribbon

Ready to eat!

Glitzy Spider Napkin Rings add a little bling to black and white napkins covered with bats.

Little Ghost S’mores don’t scare anyone, but they look so cute standing upright on a antique relish tray, next to a twinkly gazing ball. Candied Pretzel Wands are tucked into a copper canister with Boo! tags, spiders, and bats …”oh my!”

Dangling from spooky branches painted black our Treat Bags are filled and ready to be “picked” by our kids and grand kids, coming for Halloween dinner.

Hope you have a spook-tacular Halloween with plenty of “sweets” and even sweeter moments to look back on.

Al Fresco Dining in Autumn … Easy Caramel Toffee Cream Cheese Dessert Dip by Trenda

Autumn, sunshine and al fresco dining are, like the song says … “a few of my favorite things!” Yesterday was a beautiful autumn day with a light breeze that “ruffled” the lake and teasingly tugged at the chimes taunting us for staying inside. By noon, we happily “gave in” and I made lunch and served it “al fresco” on the deck.

And for lunch …

Caramel & Toffee Cream Cheese Dessert Dip is delicious and takes longer to say, than it does to fix! You’ll love how easy it is to “assemble” and the autumn flavors are perfect for afternoons snacks or unexpected guests! (:

Caramel & Toffee Cream Cheese Dessert Dip

Ingredients:

1 block (8oz) cream cheese
Caramel Ice Cream Topping
Toffee bits or chocolate covered toffee bits
Apples

Instructions:

Unwrap and place entire block of cream cheese onto a plate.
Spoon enough caramel ice cream topping over the cream cheese to cover and “pool” around the base of the cream cheese.
Sprinkle toffee bits liberally over the caramel topping.
Slice apples, brush sides with lime or lemon juice to prevent browning.
Arrange apples around dessert dip.

Apples on embossed leaf plates and miniature pumpkins sit atop silver chargers and a reed woven basket.

Halloween DIY Napkin Rings …………. by Trenda

Look who suddenly appeared, looking like he flew straight from the pages of Edgar Allan Poe’s poem and obligingly perched, right next to me. While I slowly reached for my phone, my mind began the recitation of these remembered words … “Once upon a midnight dreary, when I pondered, weak and weary …” .

I love decorating the table for any occasion and for HALLOWEEN … I use all kinds of “fol-der-ol and fid-dle-dy dee” to set the mood for a magical night that’s filled with possibilities and imagination! During these next 3 weeks, I have several fun projects that I am going to be sharing with you that will help you create your own “boo-tiful” Halloween tablescape! Today, I am going to show you how to make these spook-taular Halloween napkin rings!

Supplies needed:

glue gun
glittered spiders
copper wire (10 yds/20gauge)
beads (glass seed bead mix “Scream”)
assorted ribbons matching beads (I used Halloween polka dot & spider ribbon)
wire cutters
needle nose pliers

Instructions: (see pictures below)

Cut 4 pieces of copper wire, each approximately 12 inches long
Lay the 4 lengths of wire together and pull the wires up and around your fingers to form a circle large enough for a napkin to be inserted into the opening.
Twist where the wires cross at the top of the circle 1 or 2 times to secure the circle in place.
Splay out the 8 wires above the now-formed wire circle.
Begin threading beads, creating your own color pattern.
Leave enough wire at the top exposed to bend the wire with your needle nose pliers, forming a small closed loop to secure the beads in place.
After each wire is filled with beads and the wire is crimped, wrap the beaded wire around your little finger to “coil” your wire.
Remove your finger and bend each of the 8 coiled “legs” into desired shape.
Using your hot glue gun, place a small amount of glue on your ribbon and begin wrapping the copper circle.
Continue wrapping until the entire wire circle (the napkin ring) is covered with ribbon.
Cut the ribbon and hot glue in place, at the top of the napkin ring. Shape and adjust beaded “legs” how you like them, then hot glue on glittery spider.

Just look what a glitzy napkin ring this makes … perfect for all things “outlandish” for Halloween!

Pumpkin patch and harmless spiders …

Even just stacked in a pedestal votive cup “the eensy, weensy, spiders …” look frighteningly festive!

The Coconut & Key Lime Macaroons were so easy and I got this recipe from dessertnowdinnerlater.com

Coconut Key Lime Macaroon Ingredients:

3 1/2 cups sweetened coconut flakes
1/4 cup flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 Tablespoons lime zest, divided (optional)
3 Tablespoons lime juice
1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk

Instructions:

Combine sweetened coconut flakes, flour, salt and 1 Tbsp lime zest (opt) in a bowl. Mix thoroughly.
Add key lime juice and sweetened condensed milk. Mix well with a spatula.
Using a small scoop (I used a melon ball scoop) scoop cookie dough balls onto a greased or lined baking sheet. Sprinkle the tops of the raw macaroons with the remaining zest on top (if desired)
Bake a t 350 degrees for 12 – 15 minutes or until the edges and bottom of the cookies are browned. Allow to cool completely. Enjoy!

Coconut & Key Lime Macaroons on Dessert Tray

Key Lime Dessert Dip & Dippers

Ingredients:

2 Tablespoons Key lime juice
1 oz graham crackers, ground
dash green food coloring (opt)
1 2/3 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
16 oz. block cream cheese (softened)
1/3 cup sour cream

Instructions:

Using a mixer, combine softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, sour cream, and key lime juice.
Mix ingredients on lowest setting for 1 minute.
Increase mixing speed to medium and continue blending dip for an additional minute, or until mixture is fluffy and creamy.
Fold in green food coloring (opt)
Transfer dip from mixing bowl to serving bowl.
Sprinkle the dip with ground graham crackers, refrigerate at least 30 minutes, or until ready to serve.
Serve with additional graham crackers, vanilla wafers, animal crackers or gingersnaps for *dipping. (*For garnish on my graham crackers – I dipped the ends of my “dipping graham crackers” in melted (per instructions on package) vanilla almond bark; then sprinkled the almond bark with lime green nonpareils, before the candy hardened)

Fitz & Floyd dishes in lime green and lemon yellow put a smile on my face, with their cheer-y colors and images of “pucker- power” … a very unexpected and loved gift from our son and daughter-in-law. <3

A darling little sugar bowl with a lemon domed lid is topped with a lime wedge finial and holds sparkling colored sugar. Under an antique cut-glass cloche is fresh cut lemons and limes for crystal glasses filled with tea.

Bright yellow Fiesta plates rest on cherished white doily’s edged in green that Richard’s mother crocheted for us. Bright yellow and lime green napkins, from a dear sister are tucked in with a Battenberg lace napkin and both are inserted into a wooden napkin ring and topped with a gold dessert spoon.

A Key West “breezy feel” is easily achieved with fresh cut ferns draping over the table and limes and lemons piled high into clear glass-footed vases, that our daughter gave me, and I love. <3 A crystal biscuit barrel holds ice and is ready for refills.
