My Heroes Have Always Been Soldiers … a Memorial Day Tribute with pictures of family and friends attending by Trenda

In my blog “This Land Is Your Land”  I told you that my husband had been asked to be the guest speaker at a Memorial for his dear friend, Bill Seaborn.  Bill and Richard were helicopter pilots and their crew, 4 Special Forces troops, and the ship they were flying was shot down while flying a rescue mission in Vietnam.   im-in-love-withMemorial Day weekend was the date appropriately set for the tribute and memorial and the 4 days we were in Mississippi were bittersweet as we met with Bill’s fiance, Sharon Bowie, his family, friends, and some of the men that served with Richard in the 240th Helicopter Assault Company … some of the men Richard hadn’t seen since they were flying together over the jungles of Vietnam, 47 years ago.guardianI’ve included some poignant parts of Richard’s speech below and pictures that were taken during the Vietnam war that can be used to depict any one of hundreds of missions our American troops carried out.  Although I have excerpted Richard’s speech, this blog is longer than I usually post.  However, I hope you will read it all to gain a better understanding of what our American soldiers are trained to do, the hardships they encounter, the physical and mental anguish they suffer, and forever remember.Vietnam veteran

Excerpts from Captain Richard Toops Memorial Speech May 27, 2017—–

“It is a great honor to speak today about Bill…..my dear friend, a Christian, a soldier, warrant officer and leader of men, an American Hero, a gentleman (the nicest guy you could ever meet) and best of all, just a truly good friend to us all.”

“I flew with Bill, on his last mission in Vietnam, and today I have the honor of introducing to you other men of our unit who flew with us.  If you men of the 240th Assault Helicopter Company will please stand as I call you name.”…..”Capt Tom Brown, WO Joe Long, WO Al Roettger, Capt Pat Schmickrath, SP5 Bobby Taylor, WO George Stone, and not a Greyhound but a former Flight School classmate of Bill’s, Bob Shoen….It was a privilege flying with you guys and thank you for being here today.  All of you were a part of Bill’s legacy….and I appreciate that you have taken time from your lives to honor Bill today and support me as well.  Thank you.”240th.png

“This will be my first time to publicly talk in front of a large group of people about Bill and what happened.  It has always been hard thinking of what happened and reliving it, let alone talking about it.  It may be difficult at times, but please bear with me…..I like to think of myself as just a guy that had the great privilege of knowing a great man, Bill Seaborn.  I am not an accomplished or experienced speaker…..”  I have read that families and friend of fallen soldiers don’t really care how you say it,…..they just want to hear it.  Hopefully, I can do that for you all today.” ……….

“On 22 January 1971 around 0900 Hrs The White Flight Platoon (2 helicopters) the Huey flown by Bill and I, and our other ship flown by Warrant Officer Roger Moyer and his co-pilot, of the 240th Assault Helicopter Company (Greyhounds) 222nd Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Brigade, were refueling at Bearcat Vietnam following a morning mission with the 111th Special Forces (SF) at Long Than North, South Vietnam.”

“On board our UH1 (Huey) helicopter (SN 66-163-56).  Our Aircraft Commander was WO William H. Seaborn Jr. (SSN XXX-XX-1786), our co-pilot, myself, Capt Richard D. Toops, (XXX-XX-2474) our crew chief was SP-4 Jimmy Lance, our gunner was SP-4 William (Bill) Barker.  Both these guys I had flown with and I liked them and respected them very much, and both I am thankful to say ….. survived our crash….In Vietnam helicopter pilots know the crews are their lifeline and we treated them as equal brothers, they kept our Huey’s flying, and in the field they guided us into tight landing zones, and protected us with their M-60 machine guns…..”gunner“While Bill and I were refueling our Huey after our first morning mission,…..which went great and without a hitch, we received an urgent and life threatening call from the Bearcat tower requesting our  assistance to extract the crew of a crashed Light Observation Helicopter (Loach), belonging to D Troop, 3RD SQUAD, 4TH CAV, 25TH INF DIV.  The tower operator had received the call from CW2 Hugh McLeod, the pilot of the Cobra gunship accompanying the crashed Loach.  He was requesting aid for the crew of the crashed helicopter.   The crew was Warrant Officer Rog Johnson, SGT Michael Petty, and SP4 Frederick Vigil.  A rescue mission for fellow aviation crew members.  Bill and I did not have to think about what we were going to do we looked at each other and just said…. let’s go.   Any and all helicopter crews would have done the same thing.”……”As the Assistant Flight Commander and ranking member on the mission I contacted our Operation Office by FM radio and apprised them that we were going on a rescue mission to get the crew to safety”…..”We finished refueling and flew to Long Thanh North to pick up the Special Forces rescue team that would be inserted to rescue the downed crew.”…….. “We picked up 4 Special Forces troops in our helicopter, MSGT Virgil Glenn, SGT Hugh Opperman, SGT Frank Celano, and SGT Kenneth Lovelace.  Warrant Officer Roger Moyer and his co-pilot picked up 4 as well.  Capt Simpson, SFC Alton Monroe, SFC Martin Bennett, SSG Joseph Hill……”

“While Bill and I waited for the guys to load, Bill looked at me,…..actually he was staring intently at me…..and he asked me to put my chicken-plate on.  A chicken-plate is a 22 pound piece of ceramic sheets glued together, with a nylon covering (mine had no cover.)  It’s a bullet proof vest sorta,…..I told him ‘I never wear it, you know that Bill, too hot’….many had tried to get me to wear it, but to no avail.  After all, I outranked them and could do as I wanted.  I told Bill, ‘you didn’t worry about me wearing it on our morning mission’ ……..  Well, Bill looked at me as serious as I had ever seen him,…..the truth is….he is staring me down again,….and Bill said in a very somber way ‘do it for me.’……can you imagine that, now using his personality on me…..’do it for me.’……so I did….I knew at this point Bill was truly concerned……”I put the chicken-plate on over my chest resting on my lap underneath my restraint harness, covering me from my neck to my lap.  I was a little bothered, to be frank.  Bill knew my views on the chicken-plate, we had talked about it before, many times, but hey…. he musta sensed something….he cared more about my safety and he knew….he could get me to wear it…..This one seemingly simple act by Bill, thinking of me as his friend was what I felt saved my life that day.”chicken plate“We came in and hovered about 30 feet up and over the right side of the canopy opening, approximately 5-10 meters laterally from the first insertion and a few meters closer to the downed Loach, and unbeknowst to us directly above the Enemy.  We had lowered our helicopter down into the opening in the trees, go left, go right, forward a bit, go left etc, our helicopter with Bill’s hands guiding our ship through the jungle canopy. We maneuvered through the tree branches as far as we could go down.”helicopterjungle“Our ladders had been dropped, and we began to wait for the Special Forces team to descend the ladders…while hovering our 4 Special Forces troops, Glenn, Celano, Opperman, and Lovelace were descending down the ladders when we came under attack, intense and heavy fire from small arms, AK-47s.  A weapon that has a very familiar sound.  MSGT Verlin Glenn, The only one of the four Special Forces soldiers on our helicopter who survived later stated that we were receiving fire directed at the Special Forces troops on the ladders, fire directed into our cockpit and fire directed at our tail rotor.  MSGT Glenn, was shot in the chest and his ladder rung was shattered by bullets and he jumped from the ladder on our helicopter, landing in a thick bunch of vegetation, saving his life.  The other three, …..were shot and killed as they were climbing down the ladders.”SF ladders.png“Bill and I both knew our crew chief and gunner were in a tough predicament as they could not fire back with our M-60 machine guns unless they could clearly see where the enemy fire was coming from, as we now had 7 American soldiers on the ground and 4 more of our men going down our ladders below us.  A total of 11 soldiers.  And the chance of hitting our own men was just too great. …..We were hovering in and among the trees and with men going down our ladders and were now a stationary target for the enemy below….”dropoff.jpg“Bill was at the controls, and  I had my left hand on the hot mike switch on the radio control switches located on the center console between both pilot seats and my right hand loosely around the cyclic  control as was our normal protocol entering and exiting Landing and pickup zones.  At this time Bill and I were not talking to each other, only listening to our crew talking through the intercom in our helmets and keeping us from hitting the rotor blades on the trees on both our sides.”cockpit.jpg“When the Enemy  fire started.  Loud, very very loud bullets coming into the cockpit at a heavy rate, it was very violent, everything in the cockpit was being hit and was being shredded and destroyed, my left hand was blown into the air, and off of the radio switch, as bullets started penetrating and destroying the radio console between Bill and my seats.  Because of this I was unable to contact Roger’s ship, the Command and Control ship or any of the gunships overhead.  We were all,…. now alone. …… The firing continued without letup.  Everything in our cockpit, the dash, bubble of the helicopter, radio console, my chicken-plate” [protective body armor  made of ceramic sheets glued together, weighing approximately 20 lbs.] “were being ripped apart and spraying shrapnel everywhere.   The inside of our cockpit was disintegrating.”czpilot“Bullets were ricocheting their way across my chicken-plate and splattering me with shrapnel, but thanks to Bill insisting I wear my chicken-plate, they were not going into my chest…….At what seemed now like an unending attack, with tremendous noise and destruction, something happened, ……Bill and I at the very same time turned our heads and eyes just slightly towards each other and exchanged a quick look……. I know we both needed some comfort from the other…….some form of brotherly reassurance that this nightmare would end soon,… Something, anything to stop the noise and devastation……our communication system was gone and we could not communicate via intercom or radio.  …….And as we both caught one another’s eye’s…. Bill was struck and killed instantly……….”

“I knew it, ……..immediately, I knew it, ………..I was looking in Bill’s eyes when it happened, ……..I could not think any differently. …..he did not suffer…….  I gasped for air….Oh My…… it was such a terrible feeling, I was so sad with deep sorrow,…. then I felt alone, ……then I was just so mad….very mad…all these different thoughts in less than a second…..my head was exploding with emotion…..”

“Looking back I’m glad Bill’s final moments were with me, his friend, a fellow Christian…..We were not alone……Jesus was with us.   We never were alone.”angel“But time does not stop….my military training took over from my emotions……..The ship was starting to feel the effects of the onslaught.  It was getting unsteady.  I had taken all the controls now and my mind was telling me ‘keep it together Richard, ……Come on, just get us outta here.’ I was going to try and bring us straight up, I did not know if the guys were still on the ladders or not, but I knew if they were they would hold on. …. Some months earlier we extracted two Special Forces troops from contact with the enemy in War Zone D we had to carry them several miles with them hanging on the ladders,  while we escaped the hostile fire.  Today I would have to clear the trees before we could go forward and get outta there.”ladders‘The Helicopter then lurched violently, the nose turned down and the ship starting rotating to the right. As this happened the tail of the ship started to rise up.  I pulled additional collective and then pulled the cyclic back with my right hand to try and regain some control, I pushed the pedals as I tried giving more power,  but I received no response and we started quickly spinning towards the trees on our perimeter.  The engine was still operating, and by our helicopter-spin to the right I knew our tail rotor must have been hit by enemy fire and rendered inoperative.    I saw the trees we were about to smash into,  coming towards us ……and, I knew I was not in control,  there was nothing I could do, ….Our helicopter had taken too much damage…. and I then knew….. the controls are gone, my options were  gone,….. my friend was gone….at this time I had no idea the fate of Jimmy and Bill Barker.   We had no communication equipment, so I could not talk to them …..And as I saw the trees coming, I said ‘Lord…..just make it quick.’  I was resigned to crashing,…  We then crashed very, very violently into the trees and I was immediately knocked unconscious.  Our ship, Bill, myself, Jimmy and Bill Barton, we fell to the jungle floor as one big awkward, mangled mass of machine and men……metal breaking bones and tearing flesh as we slammed through the trees until we hit the jungle below.  Our turbine jet engine still eerily humming away.  But our plight was not over.  Not yet……we were now no longer above the enemy ……we were now in the enemy’s living room.”downed Huey“I awoke from unconsciousness lying in the jungle in the middle of a Vietcong base camp not knowing how I ended up out of the ship, and had the fleeting thought that maybe I was wrong …..that Bill was down here with us alive…and that what I had seen was not real, ‘shoot, I thought, I have been wrong many times in my life, Lord…just let this be another one of those times’….Then My concern shifted to our guys in the back….were Jimmy and Bill Barton alive….since our intercom system had been severed when the firing had started….I did not know.  I later learned that Jimmy had been thrown out over the M-60 machine gun mount upon crashing and his torso and stomach had been split open.  Bill Barton suffered broken bones and other injuries, as he was thrown out of the helicopter as well, ….and he was the one,……although terribly wounded, risked his life to pull Bill and myself out of the crashed Helicopter.   While on the ground I groaned in excruciating pain  ……….”My body hurt so bad, I could only see shapes and it seemed so dark.  I was slammed in the back by what felt like the butt of a weapon, and told in a low but forceful tone to shut up and I went back into the security of my unconsciousness.  (the guys from Roger’s ship had come to our aid after finding the Loach crew all dead and were now fighting for us.)  The bad guys were still there. …..  I learned from Captain Tom Brown, Maddog 6, our gunship leader that upon hearing of our crash that every gunship pilot and ship available at Bearcat was flying to our location to help us, to help us…to give us security…protection, to rescue us, ….Everyone of them wanted to help us so much any way they could.  Tom Brown said our gunship pilots were ready to light up the jungle.”warzoneDThe Special Forces troops and our aircrew performed their mission with great courage, valor, selflessness, and dedication.  John Kennedy once said in his book Profiles of Courage “A man does what he must — in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers, and pressures — and that is the basis of all human morality.”jfk2“I am proud of all these guys……..And Bill for making me wear my chicken-plate on this mission, he was my friend.  And I was his friend and he took great care of me.  I know he saved my life….not a doubt in my mind.  Not a doubt.  Our Gunner Bill Barker saved my life a second time, in spite of his injuries and with the enemy all around us, he at his own risk pulled Bill and I from the helicopter after we crashed and before our chopper was hit by an RPG shell, as our chopper lay in a twisted mass…..My life was saved a third time as the Special Forces troops from Roger’s ship surrounded our crashed chopper to protect us, Capt Simpson and SFC Monroe were wounded as they were hit by shrapnel from the RPG round that struck our Huey on the ground.  I was saved a fourth time a few weeks later in a hospital in Japan from internal bleeding.7 American heroes were killed that day and 6 American heroes were wounded… …..three of those killed were from the 25th Division Loach we were trying to rescue, four were killed from our ship, and 4 wounded, and another 2 were wounded from Roger Moyer’s ship.  We lost 2 helicopters and I was told the first medivac helicopter that came to get us out for medical attention took fire and was hit and had to withdraw.   Ultimately, the 25th Infantry Division sent in a company of  150 to 200 infantry soldiers in a nearby LZ to come to our rescue.  Our mission was finally over.”joe kline.jpg

As I lay there on the jungle floor, my body in pain [my ankle had been shot, my ankle bones were all shattered, …..my toes on one foot were all broken, my tibia in my leg was broken, my femur was broken and twisted, I had a deep hematoma on the inside of my legs that ran from my knee to my upper thigh. My knee was badly damaged, I had been shot through the back, the bullet barely missing my spine] “my chest was bruised and beaten from bullets but nothing….I repeat nothing, got through my chicken-plate, my hand sustained shrapnel wounds from the bullets coming through the radio console, my face was smashed in like it had been hit with a sledge hammer from the crash, my orbital bone, my nose, and my jaw were all broken and flattened.  My skin above my brow had been-peeled back.  My eyes were both hemorrhaging, my face sustained shrapnel wounds and would take over 50 stitches to sew up. ……But I was alive……God was with me through all those brave guys around me…..For the next 5 1/2 months that I was in the hospital and 2 months afterwards in rehab I learned to eat again, to walk again and then get the news that I would never be able to fly again and my military career was over…..of all my injuries….the only injury that prevented me from flying again was the destruction of my ankle, limiting the movement necessary for controlling the anti-torque pedals in a helicopter.  I realized my vision from God some months earlier regarding my ankle injury was not the only injury I would receive in Vietnam as I had thought, but rather the injury that would end my military career.  The only thing I ever truly wanted to do in life was now gone.  They medically retired me from the Army.  But…..I would have gladly traded all that to have my friend Bill back a thousand times over.”all gave freedom “Bill was a fellow pilot, but a friend and brother first of all, he died trying to save others, what greater honor is there.  He will forever be missed, always be remembered….and because of memorials like this, never be forgotten.  Bill died a hero and for that we can all be very proud.  I am always truly sorry for the loss of a great and wonderful person here on earth, but we will be reunited in Heaven, our eternal home, reserved for those who have accepted Jesus as their Savior.  Please….before I finish…..there is life and there is death….there is a heaven…..there is a hell, if you don’t know the Jesus, Bill and I know and are not sure you are going to heaven, please talk to me, Brother Willy, or my wife before you leave today.  I know I will see Bill again.  Please….don’t you leave today without having that certainty.”2defining forcesJesus“In closing……While in grade school my teacher asked me to read a friendship speech at one of our kid/parent banquets.  I think I was maybe 10 years old.  I was so nervous to get up in front of anybody, but got through it.  At the end of that speech was a very simple poem which I will always remember, and have for nearly 60 years……fitting for a bunch of 10 year old’s then and for us older 10 year old’s as well today…..and I close with it. ‘Remember this and bear in mind  A good true friend is hard to find  So when you find one good and true  Do not forsake him for a new’……”Bill, we will never forget you……and we will meet again……”

“I would like this moment to personally give the slow salute to my great friend……Bill Seaborn………… I SALUTE YOU.”

The days of June are marked off the calendar with the “procession” of different celebrations and “happenings.”  Flag Day – June 14th … Father’s Day – June 18th … and the longest day of the year, Summer Solstice – June 21st.  Keep the “red, white, and blue” decorations handy and get out those summer recipes and “Father’s Favorites!”  Two of our favorite’s here at Cottage Green are … my recipe for Delicious BBQ Beans and Sand Pail Ice Cream

We love the smoky flavor of these “Delicious BBQ Beans” and the enhanced layer of flavor that the bell pepper adds!  I also love that the beans are cooking in the crock pot while I’m away or I’m busy preparing other dishes.

Now, for some elegant DIY place cards that are easy to make that will add an “air” of sophistication to your “Father’s Day” table.  If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, you know I love “dressing” the table!  One of the easiest ways to make your table festive and make every guest feel important is by adding place cards to your tablescape.  I made these simple, but elegant place cards for a graduation party and they are perfect and serving “double-duty” … for our Father’s Day celebration!

welcome fatehr's day placecards.png

Here are supplies needed to make these place cards:

supplies.png

I bought my miniature decorative tassels in the “Notions” section at Hobby Lobby (where the fabrics/buttons/ribbons are located).  I also bought my place cards and my clear stamp pads at Hobby Lobby, in the stationery section.

place cards.png Instructions:

  1. Punch a hole in upper left-hand corner of each place card, making sure you punch the hole through the front and back of the place card.
  2. Insert the opposite end of the tassel through the punched hole in the front of the card (insert, front to back) so that the tassel is in the front of the place card.
  3. Bring the looped end of cord over the top of the place card and insert (thread) the tassel through the corded opening and pull gently to secure the “tassel in place.  Make sure the knot is not taut, so the tassel drapes loosely down the front of the place card. * (see photo below)
  4. Stamp the front of each place card with a filigree frame of your choice from your selection of clear stamp pads.  Make sure you allow enough time for the ink to dry before handling.
  5. After ink has thoroughly dried, write each person’s name centered in the stamped frame.

*Close-up photo of #3 instructions:closeup tying

I love the elegant and “man-ly” look of these place cards and can’t wait to show you how they look “gracing” our Father’s Day tablescape!

Welcome to the Lake … DIY Wreath for the Summer!

~ Trenda

I was delighted when I saw this rustic looking ribbon covered with fishing terms in bold fonts!  I had been wanting to make a wreath for our front door and the “discovery” of that ribbon set “the theme” for my whole wreath.  After finding the fishing ribbon, the rest of the coordinating ribbons were easily found.  A coarse textured, sage green ribbon, a loose weaved burlap colored ribbon, a rope-like ribbon, and a wooden fish and bobber finished my purchases and I was ready to begin making my wreath.  A wreath that would “say” …  “Welcome to the long days of summer at the lake!”

wreath.png

Here are supplies I used making my lake wreath:

  • straw wreath form
  • floral pins
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • ribbons – at least 3 different colors or widths
  • wooden fish and bobber

supplies final.png

Only materials needed … scissors, a ruler, a straw wreath, floral pins, ribbon, and a wooden fish and bobber! (Note: Be sure to leave the clear plastic covering on your straw wreath to keep your wreath intact, and your straw from shedding all over your floor!)

pics1stinstructions.png

Instructions: (see pictures above)

  1. Measure a length of ribbon approximately 17″ long and cut.  (Note: When you cut your ribbon, make a “pretty” diagonal cut since this will be the “tail” of your bow!)
  2. Grasp the cut length of ribbon in the middle and put your thumb on the center of the ribbon.
  3. Make a loop on each side of the center point (where you are holding the ribbon) These loops are the 2 loops your bow.  Grasp where the 2 loops cross over each other, in the center.
  4. Bunch the center of the ribbon together and place a floral pin over the “bunched” ribbon  and push the “bow” into the straw form, pushing the floral pin all the way down.  (Note: the “tails” of your bow add fullness to your wreath!)
  5. Make your next bow, repeating the same steps but alternating the colors of the ribbon you are using.
  6. To make your wreath fuller, place your next bow so one side of the loop goes between the “tails” of the previous bow, then pin.   Switch the direction of your bow each time before pinning.
  7. When your wreath is covered with bows, go back and fill in the sides and center where you see any gaps.

step2

I added my “rope cord” filler by going back after my wreath was complete and floral pinning just a loose cord around the entire wreath.  Last touch … I floral pinned my little wooden fish and bobber dangling on a piece of twine, near the top of the wreath so it would hang down in the center of my wreath.

Mother’s Day Tablescape and DIY favors

Happy Mother’s Day!  It has been a beautiful weekend packed with time spent with all of our dear children and grandchildren … and today was a perfect day for a Mother’s Day dinner served outside on the deck!  Adding a touch of sweetness and “gracing” our table, I used the DIY place cards and DIY napkin rings (click here for instructions!) that I taught you how to make earlier this week! (:

Crocheted Battenberg lace place mats match the “grid work” of the antique wrought iron chairs.  This beautiful table belonged to my grandmother … a cherished gift to me from my mother.

A bright floral napkin ensconces each white napkin edged with Battenberg lace – both are slipped into DIY Spring napkin rings (click here for instructions!) and a matching DIY place card, “reserves” each seat!

I was delighted when I found these charming green bowls on one of our “antique-ing excursions!”  The bowls look like little cabbages and for this tablescape, I used them to hold Sweeteners.  Carrying out the spring/garden theme and adding some whimsy,  I placed some miniature cabbage teapots under a domed pedestal plate.

Now, one more DIY project to show you … I made these sweet little favor boxes to send home with each of our “guests!”  If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, you know I love making favors or treat bags for our “get-together’s.

favors.png I bought a package of these little boxes at Hobby Lobby on the party aisle where the crepe paper and favor bags are.  They are called Gable boxes and they come 12 to a package for only $3.99. (Download the Hobby Lobby App to get 40 percent off  on one regular priced, that can be used each time you shop at Hobby Lobby!) Using my Recollection tag die-cutter, I punched out tags from stock card in a variety of Spring colors and stamped them with bird nests, “For You” and a filigree frame (I wrote each guest’s name inside the frame) and used my hole puncher to punch a hole in each colored tag. Then, I filled each favor box with a fine sparkly shredded grass, nestled in some individually wrapped chocolates, tied a ribbon around each box and added a “set” of tags (1 of each … a bird nest tag, a “For You” tag and a filigree frame with the guest’s name on it) and tied them on to the ribbon of each favor.

“FOR YOU” … favor boxes are waiting by the front door to be given with goodbye’s and final hugs; a sweet remembrance of another special day together.

This is the second Mother’s Day my own dear mother has been in heaven; I miss her every day and continually think of her, particularly on this special day.  What a blessing it was to be her daughter!  Her love, inner strength, joy, contentment and faith in Christ continue to be an inspiration to me.  “I’ll love you forever, like you for always, Mom” <3

” … her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’  Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.  Honor her for all that her hands have done …”  Proverbs 31:28-31

Mother’s Day DIY place cards and napkin rings

~ Trenda

tablescape .png“Tra la! It’s May! The lusty month of May!”  Vanessa Redgrave sang in the Broadway musical, CAMELOT. The charming but now archaic definition of lusty, according to Merriam-Webster is merry and joyous.  Looking out our open screen door to blue skies and hearing the birds joyously “tra-la’ing” as they go merrily about picking up choice “bits and pieces” to line and feather their nests, it is definitely “the lusty month of May!”  The month of May is filled with promise, celebrations and events. One of the preparations I enjoy the most before any holiday or get together is getting the table ready and “dressed” for the occasion. Look at these darling place cards I made with matching grapevine napkin rings; perfect for a woodland theme Bridal shower, a Spring Tea Party or Mother’s Day Brunch!

place cards napkin holders.png

I bought a package of plain white place-cards and my mini grapevine wreaths from Hobby Lobby.  Then I took my scalloped die-cut punch and punched along the bottom of the place-card.  To decorate each place card I hot glued “a bit” of ivy in the left hand corner of the place-card, placing it so the greenery “peeked” over the top and softened the corner of the card.  On each piece of greenery, I glued a single blossom from a silk hydrangea and some tiny pink flower buds.  For the final touch and to “blend” the look of the tiny posy … I glued individual pieces of assorted “fillers” I had from making other floral arrangements.  ie: tiny ivy leaves, eucalyptus, birch twigs … Then I wrote the name of each of our “guests” on the place-cards.

place cards.png

After I finished all the place cards I needed, I started making my mini-grapevine napkin rings. I used the same technique and materials making these that I used making my place cards, so all would match.

“This Land Is Your Land” … Road Trip from Texas, to Mississippi, to Missouri, back to Texas!

~ Trenda

Richard has been asked to speak at a Memorial Service commemorating his dear friend, Bill Seaborn.  Bill was killed the day he and Richard were flying together on a rescue mission and their helicopter was hit by AK-47 fire and subsequently crashed into the jungles of Vietnam.  Before the scheduled date of the ceremony, we wanted to spend some time getting to know Bill’s family and friends and we also needed to make arrangements and check out accommodations for those in the 240th Helicopter Assault Company that will be attending the ceremony.  We were in Mississippi for 3 memorable days, spending time with people that all loved Bill.  Everyone was welcoming and gracious and we instantly became friends.  Though we are still apprehensive about the actual ceremony (I’m sure I’ll be writing about that after it occurs!) and the heart-stirring tribute commemorating Richard’s dear friend, we are looking forward to seeing all these lovely people, again. Afterwards, we drove from Mississippi to Missouri for a much needed vacation and to spend time visiting with Richard’s family.

Pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and look at the stunning pictures I took along our 1,384 mile road trip!  As I looked at these pictures I couldn’t help but smile as the remembered words and melody that my great-uncle Woody Guthrie wrote and sang, America’s beloved folk tune “This Land is Your Land” (this proud niece can’t help but boast!) accompanied my viewing. (:

Azalea & Spring Flower Trail in Tyler, Texas

~ Trenda

One of our highlights each spring is going to the Azalea & Spring Flower Trails in Tyler, Texas.  The brick paved roads on the trail meander through neighborhoods lined with charming and prestigious historic homes and gardens that visitors are “invited” to walk through and are filled with blooming azaleas, Dogwood Trees, tulips, and “all things Spring.”  Completing the feeling of “gentler days” and nostalgia, Azalea Belles (young ladies chosen from Tyler’s high schools and home schools) meander around the gardens and greet visitors wearing beautiful antebellum gowns reminiscent of those worn by the Southern Belle’s in the years prior and during the Civil War.

Azalea trail collage

Each spring over 100,000 people come from all over the USA to visit Tyler and the Azalea Trails.  Today you can open this “garden gate” and vicariously enjoy a “scroll” through these enchanting gardens. (:  All of the pictures I am sharing in my blog today are pictures of people’s homes and their backyards (not parks!) that they so kindly let us “tour” and walk through on the Azalea Trails.  The owners of this next home (pictured below) chatted with us and told us that every afternoon they come and sit under this gorgeous wisteria-covered pergola and enjoy a glass of ice cold Dr. Pepper! This Way to the Easter Egg Hunt! Plus … DIY “Carrot Cutlery” & “Carrot” Bubble Wand

~ Trenda

collage Easter

“The stars at night are big and bright” ‘we Texans love to sing … look below the Red, Lone Star, your egg should be in sight!’  This is a clue from our Annual “Clan” Easter Egg Hunt that all of our family participates in!  Each family member is assigned a particular color of egg and gets a sheet of numbered clues directing them to where their eggs are hidden.  The eggs must be “gathered” in the same order that the clues are given.  Each “participant’s clue sheet is in different order, so everyone is running to different locations at different times and can only pick up their color of egg.  For our littlest ones, I have easier clues and pictures or numbers, marking where their eggs are!  The first one to find all their eggs, gets the grand prize and our Family Egg Trophy to take home and display until the following year.

Now, for this special Egg Hunt …. our picnic fare and ware has to be as “fun” as the occasion! (:  Look at this bunny caddy crate!  It looks darling loaded with bright green polka dotted plates, lime colored cutlery wrapped in orange napkins and tied with raffia (to look like carrots!) and tucked into this fun carrot vase, befitting any Bunny Picnic!

bunny caddy.jpg

For each set of “carrot” tableware … place a green spoon, a green fork, and a green knife on top of an orange paper napkin; roll up so that the cutlery “peeks” out of the top of the napkin, like carrot tops and tie a raffia bow around each set of tableware.

trio caddy.png

A little whimsy and favor “For you!” …  Slender orange bubble wands look like a bunch carrots – especially after I added a bit of gauzy green ribbon and a lime green label to each “carrot top!”  To make my tags, I used my Recollections over-sized “punch” die-cutter (I bought mine from Michael’s) and stamped each label with the words “For You.”  A little bubble fantasy and favor for each “participant.” (:

Our Annual Clan Easter Egg Hunt has become one of our favorite family traditions with shouts of laughter and a special camaraderie and competition between the children and the adults!  I love making up the little “sing-song” clues each year -like the sample above (; … that sends everyone scurrying all over the yard, out on the dock, and up the deck stairs looking for their eggs!  From the pictures I take while everyone is dashing about, our son makes a video of the whole event complete with music, captions and headlines for everyone which becomes another treasured volume in our set of “family times.” <3

P. S.  I already heard that 2 of our Clan are wearing competition tee-shirts they’ve made in keeping with “the spirit of the day!” (:  I can’t wait to see them!

I’d love to hear about some of your family traditions and hope you’re enjoying this glorious season of the year with loved ones and friends!

DIY Easter Bunny Treat Bags

Trenda

“Here comes Peter Cottontail, hoppin’ down the bunny trail and I am happily preparing for our little bunny’s that are coming to dye dozens of eggs and … all “us bunny’s” here at Cottage Green are anticipating our Family Easter Egg Treasure Hunt, complete with prizes and a trophy! (:  We have been out of town for the last 2 1/2 weeks so this week is going to be especially busy and “filled” with Easter preparations!

treat bags.png

These “Big-earred Bunny Bags are so cute and take just a few minutes to make!  They are reinforced paper sacks and hold lots of Easter goodies, dyed eggs, jelly beans, cupcakes, Peeps, Chicks, and sugary treats!  I bought my treat bags, pink and white gingham ribbon, tissue paper, felt hearts, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes at Michael’s.  (Tip: I used my glue gun instead of Elmer’s Glue-All to make my assembly time faster!) Plus, I also used a pair of scissors and a ruler.

Supplies needed:

supplies final.png

To begin … adhere a pink felt heart in the center of each bag, for the bunny’s nose.  Position and glue 2 googly eyes above each nose.  Then, pull out two strands of shredded color paper.  Fold both shredded tissue strands in half to make 4 whiskers for each side of the bunny’s nose.  Place the 4 whiskers on one side of the heart, where they touch the “heart nose” and glue in place.  Repeat process, and glue 4 more whiskers on the other side of the heart nose.  Trim whiskers to desired length.

whiskers.pngSimple Bow instructions:

  1. Measure and cut a 12″ length of ribbon.  Glue ends together to form a loop.
  2. Gather ribbon together in the middle of the circled loop.
  3. Hold tightly with fingers and secure with a pipe cleaner and twist.
  4. Trim the two ends of the pipe cleaner near the “twist” with scissors or wire cutters for a neat presentation.
  5. Cut another length of ribbon, approximately 2″ in length.
  6. Fold ribbon in thirds, lengthwise and glue edges together.
  7. Wrap this short length of ribbon around the pipe cleaner.  Glue it on the underneath side of your bow, making sure it covers all of the pipe cleaner.
  8. Glue bow to the top of your Bunny Treat Bag. (Since I have both little boy and little girl “bunny’s” … I made some of my Bunny Treat Bags without hair bows!)

instructions.pngTo complete my Bunny Treat Bags I “stuffed” each bag with bunny ears made from gift wrap tissue paper.  I  cut one sheet of white tissue paper in half and formed a “bunny ear” by grasping the 1/2 sheet of tissue paper in the center.  Then, while holding the center portion of the paper in one hand, I ran my other hand up over the tissue, while grasping it lightly to make loose folds.  Then, I stuffed my “ear” into the treat bag so that the pointy ends of the tissue were sticking out to resemble a long ear.  I repeated the entire process for the 2nd bunny ear, using the other 1/2 of the tissue paper.  To form the pink “interior ears” I  used my pink or my gingham gift tissue.  Again, I cut each piece of gift tissue in half, “fluffed” my tissue and inserted into the bag, in front of the white outer ears.  Use your imagination, they do look like Easter bunny ears!(;

gift bag.png Last touch … I “stuck” one more felt heart on the back of my Bunny Treat Bag (I used the same color heart as I used for the bunny’s nose) and placed it near the bottom of the treat bag. Then I glued a little pom pom on the heart to make a fuzzy little bunny tail! (:

pompom Bunny tails.png

Get ready for more fun and festive ideas coming this week ’cause … “hippity, hoppity Easter’s on it’s way!” (;

Today was another glorious Sunday at our church with Richard and I having the added joy of singing with our choir and presenting our Easter cantata Hope Alive In Me by Travis Cottrell.  I love every aspect of Easter!  The bunnies, the baskets, the eggs … the Cross, the Tomb, and the resurrection of Jesus … The “Hope Alive in Me!”  It’s not all about the bunny, Easter is about The Lamb.” <3

St. Patrick’s Day … “Wearing of the Green” Lakeside Lunch

written by Trenda

Today was a delightful spring day with the sun intermittently shining and sparkling off the lake or hiding behind dark clouds.  The warm breeze pleaded with us to come outside and tempted us with bird song, gentle peals from our wind chimes, and distant rumbles of thunder.  We happily acquiesced and I made lunch for us to enjoy out on the deck.

PicCollage[3561]Luncheon Menu … Chicken Salad Cucumber Bites, Crisp Parmesan & Cheddar Crostini, Tomato & Cucumber Salad, Chicken Salad, Spiced Iced Tea, and Chocolate Brownies with Chocolate Chip & Mint Frosting  … Yum! (:

To make my Tomato & Cucumber Salad I used a seedless English cucumber.  English cucumbers are also known as “seedless” cucumbers and they are longer than the regular garden variety cucumber.  Their flavor is milder, the peel is thinner, and they have smaller, less noticeable seeds than their American cousin (;  After  peeling my English cucumber,  I used my favorite kitchen tool from The Pampered Chef which slices cucumber effortlessly into rounds with decorative ridges.  I then de-seeded and chopped up a tomato, added sliced red onion, salt and pepper to taste, and Marzetti Classsic Ranch Dressing.  I didn’t measure any of the ingredients; I just adjusted the amounts of each ingredient to “our liking” or as a dear uncle would say … “By guess and by golly.” (;

One item I always keep on hand is Italian whole wheat bread loaves.  I buy a package of 12 inch loaves in the Bakery Department and then re-wrap each loaf individually in foil and place them in our freezer.  I love having these available to pop in the oven to “dress up” a simple meal and they are delicious with soups or to munch on with any salad. To make my recipe for Parmesan & Cheddar Crostini, I take a loaf from the freezer, unwrap it, place it on a chopping board and immediately begin slicing it with a serrated bread knife, “on the diagonal” into thin slices, while it is still frozen.  TIP:  Slicing bread while it is still frozen makes it easy to slice into precise, even pieces that are not misshapen, which happens when slicing “soft” bread.  I only cut as many slices as I think we’ll want from the loaf, then I re-wrap it and place it back in freezer.

  1. Slice bread and place on a baking sheet lined with foil
  2. Brush each piece lightly with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, being careful to cover entire surface.
  3. Sprinkle each slice evenly and lightly with garlic salt and pepper
  4. Add grated Parmesan cheese (enough to cover entire surface and “flavor” bread, but not so much that it “oozes” over the bread, when melted)
  5. Then, add a smaller amount of Cheddar cheese on top for additional flavor “depth” and color.
  6. Sprinkle each slice with a dusting of paprika
  7. Cook in a pre-heated, 325 degree oven until cheese has melted and edges of bread are a deep golden brown.

Parmesan & Cheddar Crostini with Chicken Salad Cucumber Bites

Now, for my delicious and super easy dessert … Chocolate Brownies with Chocolate Chip & Mint Frosting!  Make a batch of your favorite brownie recipe from scratch or use a boxed mix, if you prefer.  Tip:  You will probably have to double your homemade brownie recipe – or use 2 boxes of brownie mix – to fill a 13″x 9″ baking dish.  Make brownies according to directions.  Place in oven.  When brownies are done, take them out of the oven and immediately pour a 12 oz. bag of Nestle’s morsels – or other candy morsels – over the brownies.  (I used chocolate chip and mint morsels)  After candy has “rested”and softened on warm brownies, use an off-set spatula to spread candy smoothly over the brownies.  Let cool completely and slice with a sharp knife.

The candy hardens into a smooth, perfect glaze with no mixing or additional recipe required for frosting! (:
