DIY Homemade Seed Packets: A Fun Gardening Project
“What a playhouse is to a child, a potting shed is to a gardener”
~ Unknown
After days of colder-than-normal temperatures, the sunshine beckoned and it seemed like a good day to “go outside and play”…in the greenhouse. It was still chilly outside, but the temperature in the Cottage Greenhouse was 72 degrees…and a perfect day for dreaming of Spring flowers.
One must maintain a little bit of summer, even in the middle of winter.” ~ Henry David Thoreau
Before the first freeze, I had harvested the seeds from my flowers and I had a project in mind; I wanted to make my own homemade seed packets! The sunlight streamed through the roof of my Cottage Greenhouse as I sorted and cataloged my seeds and imagined the beautiful Zinnias, Geranium, and Hollyhocks that would come from these tiny seeds.

Wispy Asparagus Ferns trail along this darling, vintage rack with folding shelves. On a whim, I had placed some of my chubby, floral frogs on the shelves of the rack and loved how they shone against the rustic, red shelves.

My “playhouse” filled with collectibles and garden tools…an enchanting little hideaway with the smells of cedar walls and earthy things, birds twittering in the background, and a view of the lake through the open door.
My vintage 3-cornered shelf filled with garden books and more collectibles.
“All in a row”…my collection of watering cans and antique silver pitchers. I love how the gleam of the silver looks against the rugged cedar walls of the Cottage Greenhouse.
Mary, Mary quite contrary, How does your garden grow? With silver bells and cockle shells, And pretty maids all in a row.
~Nursery Rhyme
After I finished sorting my seeds, my imagination went into overdrive as I gathered the materials I needed to make my seed packets: a variety of papers…a pencil, marker, ruler, and a pair of scissors. From my craft desk I selected floral washi tape and some stickers…an ink pad, rubber flower stamps, and a little alphabet set to print the name of the seeds on each envelope.
Then the fun began! Look at all the sweet seed packets I made…each one a little different than the other, and in all different sizes!
Charming homemade seed packets ready to fill up with seed.
They’re so easy and fun to make. Are you ready to get started making your own?!!
Supplies Needed for Making Seed Packets:
Paper (I used copy paper, vellum, a brown lunch sack, wax paper, butcher paper, and various cardstock)
Scissors
Pencil/Marker
Ruler
Embellishments for packets, i.e.: stickers, washi tape, stamps, print letters for labeling
Instructions for Making Seed Packets:
Fold a square piece of paper in half, diagonally…making a folded triangle.
Look at my pretty, purple scissors with iridescent blades! Our darling, 6-year-old granddaughter gave them to me…’specially for Grandma. โค
Fold the left corner of the triangle inwards, a little past the center of the paper, and crease. Repeat the process with the right corner of the paper. Fold and crease.
Grasp either bottom corner of the paper and insert the pointed end of the paper inside the opposite corner pocket…making an envelope (See pictures below)
Open the seed packet from the top and fill with seed.
Tuck in the top of the envelope to close the packet.
Each seed packet has a different look, depending on what paper I used. This little seed packet, charming and demure, was made from a lunch bag.
This delicate and transparent seed packet was made from wax paper.
The light brown packet was made from cardstock and made a sturdier, thicker seed packet. I really liked how the stamped, black ink looked against this rugged seed packet.
Harvested seeds from our own flowers, enclosed in homemade seed packets, and tucked in a basket make sweet gifts from “The Seed Fairy” to share with family and friends.
Ready and waiting for planting!
These charming seed packets were so fun and easy to make! I hope you’ll try making some yourself. I’d love to see them! Just take a picture of your seed packets and paste your picture in the comments below or send your pictures to cottagegreenonthelake@gmail.com

HahahaโฆIโve actually thought how fun it would be to have a group of subscribers all together in my greenhouse, with all the supplies set out and ready for making seed packets, then serving afternoon tea afterwards! โบ๏ธโ๏ธ๐๐ชด

It is pretty magical in my greenhouse, especially when the weather feels like springtime in the sunshine, but winter in the wind. โบ๏ธ๐บ

I hope you do harvest your seeds from your flowers this year. It is so fun and rewarding! Each flower presents its own seed offering in a different โpackageโ or pod and itโs fascinating seeing how God so cleverly designed our plants to self propagate, throughout the generations.
