Spring in the Cottage Greenhouse…Part 1

“I set up a tea tray…an “Alice in Wonderland” kind of tea tray with a dash of woodland whimsy that seemed perfect for tea that was being served in a greenhouse tearoom, with the sky for our ceiling and a pea gravel floor.

It was a beautiful, cool, spring day and Richard and I had been working outside. We were both tired and a little chilled from working out in the cool, spring wind and I decided I’d make a pot of tea. While I waited for the water to boil, I started thinking how lovely it would be to serve afternoon tea in the cottage greenhouse…such a cozy little spot, out of the wind and the weather.

So fanciful and befitting our special, greenhouse tea party, I set up a tea tray…an “Alice in Wonderland” kind of tea tray with a dash of woodland whimsy that seemed perfect for tea that was being served in a greenhouse tearoom, with the sky for our ceiling and a pea gravel floor. Instead of filling a silver cream pitcher with cream, I filled it to the brim with plump raspberries…heaped blackberries onto an embossed, silver tray…perched a delicate set of tongs on top…stacked butter waffle tea cookies in an elegant roll-top silver butter tray…and placed everything on a silver tray I covered with a cushion of fairytale moss.

"The mere chink of cups and saucers tunes the mind to happy repose."

George Gissing

The silver service looked even more elegant among the rugged surroundings of the greenhouse. One of my favorite ways of decorating is mixing elegant and rustic elements. (Click on the following link to see)…Elegant Rustic Woodland Tablescape

I cut a sprig from our Cherry Laurel tree and perched it in a cut glass vase and placed near our setting and spread a Battenberg lace runner over the rugged, potting table. I think the contrast of the elegant silver tea tray setting amongst the decorations of the rugged greenhouse looks enchanting. The whatnot shelf holding the antique flower frogs and the dainty Depression shakers I use for storing seeds reflects the tea service.

It was delightful having our afternoon tea outside and Richard is always a Dear and the sweetest at going along with my whims. ❤
